Turkish asylum claims in Greece soar

Yunanistan
The number of asylum claims by Turkish citizens in Greece has soared since a failed coup in July 2016, independent news site T24 said .
Greek Migration Policy Ministry figures say that 17 Turks sought asylum in 2013, 41 in 2014, 42 in 2015 and 189 in 2016, 153 of them following the failed coup attempt on July 15 that year.
In 2017, 1,827 Turks applied for asylum in Greece, while 1,839 Turkish citizens applied for asylum in the year of 2018 from January to July – 687 of them in the month of July alone, T24 said.
On the other hand, over 5,000 people have been prevented from leaving Turkey on suspicion of being members of the Gülen movement, the organisation that the government says masterminded the coup attempt, in which 248 civilians and soldiers opposing the coup were killed.
Over 150,000 people suspected of links to the movement have had action taken against them since the coup attempt and over 50,000 have been jailed, according to Turkish Justice Ministry figures.
